Answer

Configuring your Duke Exchange account in Outlook 2003

  1. Be sure that you have all the most recent updates for Outlook 2003.

    Windows XP
Go to the Microsoft Office Downloads,  http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/, and click on the link Office Update in the left navigation under Updates.  Install any required updates.

    Windows Vista
Launch Windows Update.  To access this utility, click on the Windows logo then All Programs.  Windows Update should be listed among the programs and will check for all Microsoft updates.  Install any required updates.
  2. Click on the Start Menu (Windows XP) or Windows logo  (Windows Vista) and select Control Panel.
  3. Open the Mail options.  The shortcut to this will depend on how your Control Panel view is set.
    • If you see the Classic View displayed, double click on Mail.
    • If you see the Control Panel Home, select User Accounts (Windows XP) or User Accounts and Family Safety (Windows Vista) and then select Mail.
  4. From the Mail Setup - Outlook window, click E-Mail Accounts…
  5. On the Email Accounts window, select Add a new e-mail account and click Next.  If you have any other accounts already setup in Outlook 2003, you will be able to keep these and just add your Duke Exchange account but please see the note at Step 11.
  6. In the Server Type window, select Microsoft Exchange Server and click Next.
  7. Complete the information in the Exchange Server Settings window.  For the Microsoft Exchange Server enter ex-mailbox-01.win.duke.edu and for User Name enter your NetID.  Make sure the Use Cached Exchange Mode option is selected.  When you have completed these fields, click Check Name.
  8. You will be asked for your User name and Password to authenticate.  Enter WIN\NetID for the user name and your NetID password.  This will be validated and return the complete server name and your full name, which should be underlined indicating success.  If Outlook is unable to return this information or displays an error, please contact your local tech support for help.
  9. Click on More Settings...  You can enter a name for this account on the General tab.  The default is Microsoft Exchange Server, but you may change this to something more discriptive such as Duke Exchange.
  10. Click on the Security tab and check the Encryption box, Encrypt data between Microsoft Office Outlook and Microsoft Exchange Server.
  11. If you may be accessing your Exchange account from off-campus, configure Outlook to use Outlook Anywhere.

    Outlook Anywhere
Configuring Outlook to use Outlook Anywhere will allow you to access your Exchange account whether you are on Duke's network or trying to access your account from off-campus.
    1. In Microsoft Exchange Server window from the previous step, select the Connection tab.
    2. Check the Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP option, and then click on Exchange Proxy Settings…
    3. For Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange: enter exchange.oit.duke.edu after the https://
    4. Check the Connect using SSL only and Mutually authenticate the session when connecting with SSL options. In the box, type msstd:exchange.oit.duke.edu
    5. Check both the On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP and the On slow networks, connect using HTTP first… options.
    6. In the Proxy authentication settings option, select Basic Authentication.
    7. Click OK.
  12. Click OK to close the More settings window.
  13. Click Next.
Default Delivery Location With Multiple Accounts
    1. If you have another account setup in Outlook 2003 you will receive a message regarding the delivery location of mail and should click Yes to create the Outlook 2003 account.
    2. Click Finish to complete your account setup.
    3. You should still see the Mail Setup - Outlook window, otherwise follow steps 1 to 4.  Click on E-Mail Accounts…
    4. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts and click Next.
    5. You should see your Duke Exchange account listed.  From the drop-down box at the bottom of this window, Deliver new e-mail to the following location select Mailbox - First LastName and click Finish.

    6. A message will be displayed that you have changed your default mail delivery location.  Click OK.

This will ensure that all your mail remains on the Duke Exchange server.  Your account is now setup and you are ready to start using Outlook 2003 to access your Duke Exchange mail!

  14. Click Finish and your account setup is complete.
