    1. Be sure that you have all the most recent updates for Outlook 2007.

      Windows XP
Go to the Microsoft Office Downloads, http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/, and click on the link Office Update in the left navigation under Updates. Install any required updates.

      Windows Vista
Launch Windows Update. To access this utility, click on the Windows logo then All Programs. Windows Update should be listed among the programs and will check for all Microsoft updates. Install any required updates.
    2. Click on the Start Menu (Windows XP) or Windows logo (Windows Vista) and select Control Panel.

    3. Open the Mail options. The shortcut to this will depend on how your Control Panel view is set.
      • If you see the Classic View displayed, double click on Mail.
      • If you see the Control Panel Home, select User Accounts (Windows XP) or User Accounts and Family Safety (Windows Vista) and then select Mail.

    4. From the Mail Setup menu, click E-Mail Account…

    5. On the Account Settings menu, you will see any other accounts that you have configured in Outlook 2007. If this is the first account that you are setting up in Outlook 2007, then you will see a blank field. Click on New... to setup your Exchange account.

    6. Complete the information in the Add New E-Mail Account menu. Your E-Mail Address will be your primary SMTP address and the password is your NetID password (be sure you have changed your NetID password at Online@Duke so that it will sync to Exchange). When you have completed these fields, click Next.

What if autodiscover does not configure my account?
If you are located behind an ISA firewall, you may encounter an error when autodiscover attempts to contact the server to retrieve account settings:

An encrypted connection to your mail server is not available. Click Next to attempt using an unencrypted connection.

Microsoft has released a hotfix for Outlook 2007 which should correct this. If you have updated Office with the most recent Service Pack, you should already have this fix installed and may need to manually configure Outlook. You can find additional information on the fix and download it by clicking on the link at the top of the page.

      Manually configure Outlook 2007
If the hotfix still does not allow autodiscover to configure your account, you can manually setup your account in Outlook 2007:
      1. Check the Manually configure server settings or additional server types box and click Next.

      2. Select Microsoft Exchange and click Next.

      3. Fill in the required information for the Exchange server and your account:
             Microsoft exchange server: ex-mailbox-01.win.duke.edu
             User Name: NetID

      4. Click on More Settings.

      5. Select the Security tab and make sure the box is checked to Encrypt data between Microsoft Office Outlook and Microsoft Exchange.

      6. Select the Connection tab, check the box to Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP and click on Exchange Proxy Settings...

      7. In the Connection settings enter the following:
For the URL https:// enter exchange.oit.duke.edu
Select Connect using SSL only if it is not already.
Select Only connect using proxy servers... and enter msstd:exchange.oit.duke.edu
Select the box labeled On slow networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP.
Basic Authentication should already be selected.

      8. Click OK and then Finish. Your account is configured and you should be able to connect to your Exchange account when you open Outlook.  When you are prompted for your password, be sure you use your WIN\NetID for the username and your NetID password.
    7. You will receive a Security Alert to accept the settings from the server exchange.oit.duke.edu. Click Allow.

    8. You will be asked to authenticate and should enter WIN\NetID and your NetID Password.

    9. The account settings are retrieved from the Exchange server, so there are no additional configuration steps. You should see a screen indicating that the configuration is complete. If you receive any errors during this setup, please contact your IT support or see the manual configuration instructions above.

    10. When you click Finish, you may see a message regarding mail delivery location. If you do, simply click OK and continue.

    11. You should then see your new Exchange account listed in the Account Settings window.

NOTE: If you have several accounts configured in Outlook 2007, you may select which account is your default by highlighting it and clicking Set as Default.

    12. You are now done configuring your account! When you next open Outlook 2007, you may be asked for your password to connect to the Exchange server.

NOTE: Any time Outlook prompts for your Username for authentication, enter it in the format WIN\NetID.
